Lauren Miller Rogen is a screenwriter, actress, and co-founder of a non-profit organization to raise money (and awareness) for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) called, “Hilarity for Charity.” Lauren is married to the famous actor Seth Rogen. She and her husband, Seth, are involved in a joint effort to run the charity, and help the cause of fighting Alzheimer’s disease. Lauren Miller has recently gone public with her story about family members diagnosed with AD-including her grandmother, grandfather and most recently her mother’s diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer’s.
Statistics on Women and AD
One reason Miller has chosen to go public with her story was her intention to support other women coping with AD. Statistics show that 3 in 5 caregivers in the U.S. are women who provide around the clock care for a person with AD. Last year over 15 million caregivers provided approximately 18.2 billion hours of unpaid care for people with AD and other types of dementia (most of which were women).
Because of the many demands of being a caregiver, women are likely to have consequences in the workplace, as well as a high risk for stress related illnesses. This is one reason that Hilarity for Charity donates a percentage of proceeds to respite care that helps to support AD caregivers.
About Hilarity for Charity
Hilarity for Charity, launched in 2012, is a resource specifically for Millennials, aimed at helping the young generation to better understand Alzheimer’s disease. Since its inception, the organization has evolved, and today it is said to be dedicated to “raising awareness, inspiring change, and accelerating progress in Alzheimer’s care, research, and support, through the engagement of Millennials. The non-profit organization has featured variety shows with famous entertainers such as Kevin Hart, Amy Schumer, Miley Cyrus, The Backstreet Boys, and more—to entertain “young, hip professionals,” while donating the proceeds to AD research and education. Hilarity for Charity has raised over $7 million dollars to donate to the cause.
