As Mother’s Day approaches, people everywhere are looking for that perfect gift that will tell Mom just how much she is loved. But if you are a caregiver of a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), you may be wondering just what to buy this year.
One of the most cherished gifts for just about any mom (including moms with AD) is the gift of time. Depending on the stage of Alzheimer’s disease your mom is experiencing, it may be a good idea to avoid crowded restaurants and noisy shopping malls. Consider spending the day doing simple activities with your loved one, such as making as special meal or taking a nature walk.
Here are some additional Mother’s Day activity ideas offered from other family caregivers:
•Play a game of cards or other board games
•Listen to old familiar music
•Plant some flowers or work in the garden together
•Organize family pictures and/or videos and arrange photo albums
•Create new picture frames together with photos of cherished family memories
•SKYPE other long distance family members together
•Have a movie and popcorn day (with old classic movies)
•Do some sewing or knitting (depending on your loved one’s interests)
•Visit your local community center and go for a swim, walk on the treadmill, or engage in social activities together. Many community centers have seniors cooking classes and other activities.
•Organize a potluck with close family members-if your loved one gets over whelmed with large groups of people and noise, limit the number of guests and keep visit time relatively short.
These are just a few ways you could spend quality time with your loved one this Mother’s Day. The gift of your time will be no doubt the most treasured of all.
