Seniors in the United States are living longer than ever before in history. Along with aging comes the worry and concern over getting ill, and perhaps equally concerning for seniors is managing health issues to stay as independent as possible for as long as possible.
According to the Institute on Aging at the University of Arkansas Medical School, there are many lifestyle choices that seniors can make to promote long term health and vitality. Choices such as staying physically and socially active are important for seniors. Many times, older folks become sedentary and that lack of activity can really add to the risk for illness in the elderly population.
Quitting smoking and keeping body weight within normal limits are 2 other vital factors for long term health beyond age 65. Another consideration for aging adults is to consult with a specialist, trained to treat older adults-called a geriatrician. These specialists can be part of a health promotion team for elderly adults who want to take advantage of those who specializing in helping seniors with health promotion and to manage chronic illnesses that common accompany the aging process.
Statistics show that more and more adults today are learning how to manage chronic diseases and maintain an acceptable level of health and vitality at the same time.
