Alzheimer's Caregiver Support Groups-What Works, What Doesn’t Work? Part I

If you are an Alzheimer’s caregiver you may have attended a support group meeting or perhaps you are considering joining a local group.  Either way, you may be interested to learn more about caregiver support groups-what’s been found to work and what doesn’t?

Many caregivers say that the people they meet at local support group meetings are the only individuals on the planet who REALLY understand.  This translates to being comfortable sharing their experiences and feelings about caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) on a daily basis.

One man (who wishes to remain anonymous) spoke about the ease of being able to talk about the frustration he feels when his wife with AD becomes confused.  He talks about how other group members chime in and say they can really relate to those feelings.  “It’s not easy to admit to just anyone that I get angry and frustrated, the group members at my local caregiver support group can REALLY relate to what I go through,” the man stated.

An Alzheimer’s support group meeting is not just a place to go and drown in your sorrows-it’s also a great way to meet new people, laugh, socialize and feel that you are NOT alone in the world of 24 hour caring for a loved one with AD.

During caregiver support meeting’s,  group members go from telling jokes and laughing together to crying.  At the end of the meeting, they all hold hands and wish each other well in the upcoming weeks between meetings.

If you are a close friend or relative of someone who has AD, consider finding a caregiver support group in your local area.  CLICK HERE to access group meeting in your area on The Alzheimer’s Association website.
