November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month

President Ronald Reagan designated November as National Alzheimer’s disease awareness month in 1983.  To give a brief history of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), back in the early 80’s there were less than 2 million Americans who had been diagnoses with AD.  Today that number has increased to an astounding 5.4 million and is considered the nation’s 6th leading cause of death.  By the year 2030 the incidence of Americans with AD is projected to be around 8.2 million and by 2050, experts think the number of people in the U.S. with AD will be around 13.5 million.

When you see the numbers in black and white, it’s easy to figure out why growing concern for raising awareness of this debilitating disease is so vital.

There are several ways you can get involved and help with the cause of finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease including;

•Donate to the Alzheimer’s Association or another non-profit

•Get involved in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s fundraising activity in your local geographic area, click here to find out when and where a local walk is being held

•Honor a caregiver online, CLICK HERE to submit your story of a caregiver you personally know

•Volunteer to help with Alzheimer’s care-if you know an Alzheimer’s caregiver, volunteer to lend a hand with running errands, housekeeping, or direct care of a loved one with AD
Over 450,000 people participate in the Alzheimer’s Association’s yearly Walk to End Alzheimer’s fundraisers across the nation.  It’s free to register, and those who attend will be assisted in how to procure contributions to the cause by the Alzheimer’s Association’s support staff and online tools.
